S-100 Basic Fire Suppression & Safety
Description:
Upon completion of this course, the participant will demonstrate a basic knowledge of the wildland fire suppression organizational structure, the wildland fire environment, suppression and safety procedures and equipment used in British Columbia to effectively and safely respond as a basic wildland firefighter. This is a two-day training session involving one day of classroom work and one day of field work.
This course is recognized by the British Columbia Ministry of Forests as the minimum training standard required for any person to participate as a wildland fire fighter in the province of British Columbia.
This course was designed for delivery to individuals involved in wildland fire suppression operations, such as contractors, industry personnel, first nations groups, local government staff, province of British Columbia staff.
S-185 Fire Entrapment Avoidance & Safety
Description:
Designed by the BC Wildfire Service for contract crew personnel and is a mandatory safety course. The course expands on fire entrapment information from the S-100 course. By the end of this 3 to 4 hour course aims candidates should be able to a safety first attitude, following the fire entrapment avoidance guidelines, Understanding situational awareness and why it is critical to stay alert at all times while working on wildfires. In addition, candidates should be recognizing when it is time to use an escape route and move to a safety zone, or if need be, how to survive in a fire entrapment scenario.
S- 100 A
Description: Individuals must successfully complete this 3 to 4 hour course Basic Fire Suppression & Safety course refresher annually to maintain the minimum training level required to participate as a wildland fire fighter in British Columbia.
ICS 100 – Incident Command Level 100 – Introduction to the Incident Command System. Description: This course is designed to help you learn the principles of the Incident Command System and to briefly acquaint you with the basic ICS structure and terminology. ICS Orientation is intended for personnel assigned to an incident or event who have a minimum requirement for understanding ICS. This course reviews the ICS organization, basic terminology, and common responsibilities. It will provide enough information about the Incident Command System to enable you to work in a support role at an incident or event, or to support an incident from an off-site location.
W.H.M.I.S. – Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System” Description: This training program is designed to certify Canadian Employees in the identification and handling of Hazardous Materials within the work environment.
TDG – Transportation of Dangerous Goods
Description: TDG is designed to provide instruction for Canadian employees on the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations. TDG training is required for all employees involved in the transportation, storage, and shipment of goods classified as dangerous.
Each 5 Person Contractor Fire Crew in BC are required to have individuals with specific certifications in place in order to fill those roles. The above list is for the basic firefighter, and all crew members working for Strategic Fire Control require those courses.
The following is a list of specific roles on a 5 person fire crew, and if applicable, the specific training required to fill those roles:
Crew Leader: Each 5 person fire crew is required to have one person as its designated Crew Leader on the fireline. A series of advanced courses is required. We offer these courses over two 8 hour days.

ICS 100
Basic Chainsaw Operator: Each 5 person fire crew is required to have one person as its designated Basic Chainsaw Operator. This individual does not need to be a licensed Faller. Becoming a Basic Chainsaw Operator opens up an array of doors for a wildland fire fighter as well as silviculture and forestry work.
Chainsaw Safety & Maintenance”
Course Duration: 1 Day
Course Content: We offer a 1 day course covering theory, PPE use, maintenance, trouble shooting and practical experience for the operations of a chainsaw. This course concentrates on chainsaw applications for wildland firefighting and silviculture work and includes the following components: Safe chainsaw handling, chainsaw maintenance, personal protective equipment, chainsaw safety devices, bucking/limbing, types of cuts and there is also a hands on practical component for demonstration and application for lecture materials.

First Aid Attendant: Each 5 person fire crew is required to have at least two individuals certified as First Aid Attendants. At a minimum, one First Aid Attendant must have current certification in Intermediate First Aid and Transportation Endorsement (or Advanced First Aid), while the second person must have current certification in Basic First and Transportation Endorsement (minimum). Basic First Aid
Course Duration: 7 Training Hours
Course Content: Basic first aid is designed to provide lifesaving first aid skills to workers in industry. The course content includes the Roles and Responsibilities of the first aid attendant at a workplace; the Priority Action Approach to first aid management; airway and breathing emergencies in adults including CPR and AED for Adults; first aid for bleeding management; illness and medical emergency care skills.
Who Would Benefit: B.C. provincial business, industry and government agencies with employees that have an occupational requirement to be Basic First Aid First Aid certified.
Regulations and Guidelines: Meets British Columbia Occupational Health and Safety regulations (OH&S) administered through WorkSafe BC.

Intermediate First Aid
Course Duration: 14 Training Hours
Course Content: Intermediate first aid is designed to provide lifesaving first aid skills to workers in industry. The course content includes everything covered in Basic First Aid, as well as the Priority Action Approach including secondary survey; recognizing Rapid Transport criteria; amputation management; environmental emergency care; minor injury care including splinting.
Who Would Benefit: B.C. provincial business, industry and government agencies with employees that have an occupational requirement to be Intermediate First Aid certified.

Transportation Endorsement First Aid
Course Duration: 7 Training Hours
This is not a stand-alone program. It is intended to be provided in conjunction with a current Basic or Intermediate First Aid certificate.
Course Content: Transportation Endorsement first aid is designed to help first aid attendants in industry who may need to extract and transport an ill or injured worker from the jobsite to the next level of care. The course contents includes pre-planning; determining the best mode of transport; packaging ill or injured workers for transport; caring for and monitoring the injured worker while in transport; communicating with the next level of care; and transferring the person to the next level of care.
Who Would Benefit: B.C. provincial business, industry and government agencies with employees that have an occupational requirement for a Transportation Endorsement in conjunction with Basic or Intermediate first aid certification.

Advanced First Aid
Course Duration: 70 Training Hours
Course Content: CPR and breathing emergencies in adults; advanced first aid; use of oxygen delivery equipment; AED; primary and secondary assessment skills; first aid for bleeding; sudden illness and injury; rapid transport protocols; medical aid protocols; return to work protocols; packaging and spinal immobilization; record keeping; oral reporting and patient transfer skills for the occupational healthcare provider.

Danger Tree Assessor: Each 5 person fire crew is required to have an individual designated as its Danger Tree Assessor.
Wildlife Danger Tree Assessor – Wildland Fire Safety Module
Course Duration: 2 Days.
Course Content:
The course is run through the University of Northern BC as a part of their Continuing Studies programs. This is the only course required on the fireline that Strategic Fire Control does not offer as one of its course options. The course is usually offered once a year in the spring in Cranbrook. Note, there are 3 different modules, and the only one accepted on the fireline is the Wildland Fire Safety Module. More information available here: UNBC Continuing studies –

Another service provided by Strategic Fire Control is that of Structure Protection Fire Crews. These crews are strongly needed during active wildfire seasons. In busy seasons such as 2017, 2018, 2021, 2023 and 2024, Structure Protection Crews were busy throughout the province all summer long. This is a crucial part of B.C. forest fire fighting. The minimum training required to be on this type of crew is the WSPP-115 course.
WSPP-115 – Structure Protection Strategies for Wildland Urban Incidents
Course Duration: 2 Days.
Course Content:
The course is run by the BC Wildfire Service once annually in the spring here at our office in Cranbrook.
This course is designed to help fire crews have a basic understanding of effective Structure Protection Strategies and tactics used to minimize the threat to life, property, and structures threatened by wildfire. This course provides the opportunity for students to become familiar with all the equipment in a type 2 SPU trailer and know how and when it is used to accompany the skills and knowledge gained to size-up a wildland/urban interface fire incident, evaluate the potential situation, and deploy the necessary resources
